Bird Pillows Finished!

Now all the Bird Fronts are completed, and below you can see the rest of the Backs of the pillows.
I will post pictures of the finished (sewn up and stuffed) pillows when they are done. I think there are 15 of them!

Tile Backsplash Project

In the midst of all the mug and teapot and plate painting
for the Christmas shopping period, I have also been working on this kitchen tile backsplash project.
In these first pictures you can see my ideas on paper, and some of the supporting materials for the project: kitchen design elevation plans, fabric and cabinet finish samples, etc.
The cabinets are a lovely light lime green colour...and one of the fabrics features alligators, flamingos, lizards, etc, all of which the clients were delighted to see featured in my tile artwork.

Here are some of the finnished tiles. The will run all around the countertops, on the 3 walls of the kitchen, in segments. Some of the areas are only 3 or 4 tiles long, some are much longer; and although most of the tiles are 6''x6'', the section under a window will be made of 4, 1/4'' tiles.

Tropical Fish Mural Begins

Soon these stark white walls will be transformed into a painted aquarium of darting tropical fish, brilliantly coloured and having a great time.

I block in the fish sort of where I want them, and then begin putting on paint.

For the first part of the mural, I just put a lot of paint on, to make sure there is enough depth, (no pun intended) especially in the colours of the fishies.

Mural Completed

I am very happy with the final result, the style change was a great moment, and the resulting mural has a lot of depth and movement in it. It's much more interesting that the flatter effect I had begun with....

The final touch is a simple swirl/wave design in the molding of the door frames.
It adds a nice touch of delicacy to separate the blues of the mural from the blue of the wall finish.

Elevator Lobby Mural

Time for another visit to the Beach, via mural!
Later, these two areas will have flying pelicans, some beach side vegetation, a turtle, maybe some dolphins in the water, that sort of thing.
If I am allowed to, I really want to paint out/disguise some of the elevator paraphenalia: the buttons, the emergency access panel, and the light switch!

Elevators are interesting to work with. They lend themselves to a dramatic depiction of "Entering". Perhaps it's because they open for you; they don't seem as static as regular doors. Another technicality with painting elevators is the different edges have to match up, and the inside of the door has to be thought of. IE the parts, edges mainly, you see as you step OUT of the elevator. The ''Rude Mechanicals''. Almost literally.

This elevator lobby also has a side door.
The door will have the edge of a dock along the bottom, and a pelican sitting on a post stretching or looking up, or something. It will disguise the door handle.
Check back soon to see how this beach mural evolves!

Mural Completed

Look! The Lagoon Mural is now completed!

Here are some pictures of the entire thing, showing the context.

One real significant change I made to the mural in the final days was to alter the formation of the sand bar, making the beach wider, and more sloping, and adding a cut, or Pass, out to the main water from the lagoon...It made a big difference in the composition and effectiveness of the sand bar as a point of interest in the middle of so much blue water.

Some how it made the scene look less claustrophobic.

And a Way In!
